Wayne D. Russell

November 29, 1922 - January 22, 2015

Wayne D. Russell, 92 of Washington, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2015. He was born November 29, 1922 in Washington Pa. the son of Norman Neal and Agnes Irene Dinsmore Russell. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Helen Polen Russell. He is survived by sister; Lucille Russell Ross Watkins, children; David (Linda) Russell, Sherry Russell, Wray (Jan) Russell and Lee (Bridget) Russell, grandchildren; Chris (Jennifer), Bryan, Ted, Alexa, Lauren, Andrew, Stephanie, great grandchildren; Ryan and Corey and many nieces and nephews. Wayne graduated from Washington High School and Robert Morris College. Wayne served in the United States Air Force during World War II where he was a gunner on a B-29 Superfortress. He was based on the island of Tinian. His final mission was flying over the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay as General Douglas MacArthur signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender ending the war. He started in business following the war with Washington Steel. He later joined Canonsburg Metal Polishing Company and served as President. He bought the company from Teledyne in 1978 and later sold it to J&L Specialty Metals, Inc. Wayne was an avid golfer and longtime member of Nemacolin Country Club, where he served as President from 1987-1991. He spent many hours volunteering for the Pony League World Series, the Washington Ice Skating Rink and the Boy Scouts of America. His children will miss their father and friend dearly. They wish to thank the wonderful staff at Southminster Place, which is part of Presbyterian SeniorCare's Washington campus, for the extra special care that they rendered to their father. Friends will be received on Monday-January 26, 2015 from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at East Katherine Ave. Washington, S. Timothy Warco, Supervisor/Director, Susan Falvo Warco, Director, S. Timothy Warco II, Director. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday-January 27, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Smith officiating. Private interment will follow. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Presbyterian Senior Care Benevolent Fund, 835 South Main St. Washington Pa. 15301.
