Carolyn G. McGill

Carolyn G. McGill, 88, of Washington, PA died on Saturday, April 26, 2025.  She was born on June 4, 1936 in Washington, a daughter of the late Elmer and Kay Ghrist.  Carolyn graduated from Claysville High School and received both her BA and MA from California State Teacher College (PennWest).  She did her post graduate degree in Library Science at Slippery Rock University.  She was crowned Miss Mon Valley and was a top finalist in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant in 1957.

Carolyn worked for many years as a teacher, several of those years teaching English and coaching forensics at the former Immaculate Conception High School.  Throughout her career, she had taught all ages and levels from kindergarten through college undergraduates.

On December 25, 1957, she married James William “Bill” McGill, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Carolyn and Bill spent the majority of their lives in the greater Washington and Claysville areas where they raised their children and developed lifelong friendships.

Carolyn was an active member for many years at the East Buffalo Presbyterian Church.  She was an animal lover and there was always a four legged furry friend in her house or on her lap.  Heather, Penny, Hildy, and Dancer, will undoubtedly be happy for her arrival at the Rainbow Bridge.  In addition, she had a great love for the theatre and enjoyed seeing her grandchildren in both school and professional productions.  She was a voracious reader until her final days.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Siobhan McGill (Howard) of Las Vegas, NV and James “Jeb” McGill (Nancy) of Washington, PA; her “baby” sister, Alycia Ghrist also of Washington; her five grandchildren, Dane, Collyn, Durham, J. Patrick, and Megan.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Rylee, Kenadee, Natalee and Jack, along with her nieces, D’Arcy and Amanda.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. the hour of a funeral service in the East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 180 East Buffalo Church Rd., Washington PA 15301.  Pastor Linda Mankey will officiate.  At the request of the family, burial will be private in Claysville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the East Buffalo Presbyterian Church.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., S.
