Matilda Aloia Shawin

Matilda “Tillie” Mae Aloia Shawin, 91 of Washington passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care, Washington.

Tillie was born on April 8, 1930, in Washington, a daughter of the late Lucido and Stella Lucirn Aloia.

Tillie was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where she married the late Leo Shawin(ski) on August 21, 1949.  Tillie and Leo had celebrated 68 years of marriage at the time of his passing.

Tillie is survived by her three daughters, Carol (Russell) Cancelmi, Cathleen (Richard) Allinder, and Cynthia (Scott) Linville.  They were blessed with six grandchildren, Chris (Dane) Hockenbrock, Rana (Daniel) Hockman, Brian (Alexandra) Linville, Emily (Erik) Fargo, Ryan (Lauren) Allinder, and Derek (fiancé Laura Eppley), and three great-grandchildren, Anna Marie Hockman, Rock Hockman, and Noah Fargo, and two step-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Nora Hockenbrock.  Tillie is also survived by her brother, Daniel (Joan) Aloia and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family was Tillie’s greatest joy, and she enjoyed many family dinners where she served her homemade spaghetti and meatballs.  Tillie also enjoyed cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at many sporting events.

Tillie graduated from Washington High School in 1947.  She was employed for many years in local financial businesses starting at Liberty Loan and retiring from Mellon Bank.  Tillie also ran Leo’s Grocery, a store that was a part of their Nokomis Park home in the early 1960’s. 

In addition to spending time caring for her family, Tillie (and Leo) enjoyed dancing, particularly Polkas, fishing in Canada, and dartball.  Tillie also enjoyed card club, bowling and watching Pittsburgh sports.  Tillie did not like to be interrupted during a Steeler game; it was best to wait until a commercial if you wanted her attention.

Tillie also participated in Eastern Star and was an American Legion Auxiliary member.

In addition to her parents, and husband, most of her siblings are deceased.  They are Virginia (Earl) Lemley, Anna Grace (George) Yarusinsky, Dominic (Edna) Aloia, William (Glenda) Aloia, Nancy (Dennis) Gray. 

Friends will be received on Friday-October 29, 2021 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at East Katherine Ave., Washington, S. Timothy Warco, Supervisor/Director, Holly Renay Warco, Director, S. Timothy Warco II, Director, Park N. Crosier, Director.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday-October 30, 2021 at the First Lutheran Church, 92 W. Walnut St. Washington with the Rev. Robert Grewe officiating.  Those attending the funeral service should go directly to the church on Saturday.  Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.  The family would like to offer a sincere thank you to the staffs of Gateway Hospice, Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care and Woodside for their exceptional care of Tillie.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church, 92 W.
