Karen Sue Hallam Kuzy

Loving Wife and Dedicated Washington School District Educator

Dr. Karen Sue Hallam Kuzy passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 24, 2025.  She was born in Brownsville, PA, the daughter of the late John Hallam and Pearl Dennis Hallam.

On July 15, 1989 she married the love of her life, Dr. Franklin D. Kuzy.  They took great pleasure in traveling to foreign shores, especially by ocean cruises.  Some of their favorite cruises took them to Scandinavia, Russia, the British Isles, Iceland, the Mediterranean countries including the Holy Land, Egypt, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Far East.

Dr. Kuzy was a member of The Allison Christian Church in Allison, PA and St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Canonsburg, PA.  More recently she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, PA.

Karen was a 1964 graduate of Brownsville High School.  She received her bachelor’s degree (1967) and her master’s degree in education (1970) from California State College.  In 1981 she earned her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.  She was a dedicated teacher in the Washington School District.  Throughout her 35 years as an educator, she was a director of several projects, served on many committees, and touched the lives of countless students and faculty.  In 1974, she received the Washington BPW Young Careerist Award.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Franklin D. Kuzy and by two sisters-in-law, Marian (Andrew) Bartusiak of Washington and Marjorie Kinsel Dorchak, as well as a nephew, Peter Petach.

She is survived by her dearest cousin, Patti Rae Dennis and her sister-in-law, Elaine (Basil) Petach of Rye, NY.  Karen is also survived by two nephews, Dr. Robert (Susan) Bartusiak and Dr. Barry (Kristi) Bartusiak, both of Upper St. Clair, and a niece, Ann Marie Petach (Jeff Janowicz) of Rye, NY; her great-nephews, Andrew and Brady Bartusiak and Alex Janowicz; great-nieces, Jenna Brown, Alexa Scull, Taylor and Madison Bartusiak, and Maggie Janowicz, as well as her great-great nephews, Jace and Brody Brown and Sutton Scull.

There will be no public viewing at Karen’s request.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 in the Immaculate Conception Church, St. James Parish, 119 W. Chestnut St., Washington.  Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray, PA.  All are welcome to attend.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the Washington Area Humane Society at 1527 Route 136, Eighty-Four, PA 15330 or at www.washingtonpashelter.org.
